Webinar collaboration between SWS and Nickel Institute

Stainless steels and nickel alloys are the primary materials used in chemical plants.  Selecting the most suitable yet cost-effective alloy can be a challenge, as most chemical environments are not simple chemicals, but complex ones with multiple chemicals involved and many different impurities that can either increase or decrease the corrosion rate.  It is important to understand the nature of the chemical environment and the types of corrosion that may occur.  This not only affects the type of alloys used but may also affect the filler metal used in welding. A number of more common industrial chemicals will be discussed with candidate alloys, including potential risks.

About the speaker:

Gary Coates, P.Eng.
Technical manager for the Nickel Institute, Toronto, Canada.

Gary has worked in the stainless steel and nickel alloys industry for 45 years, the last 21 with the Nickel Institute. He has worked with many different industries, including the chemical industry.  He is actively involved with MTI, the Material Technology Institute of the Chemical Process Industry.
