Webinar: Welding Duplex Stainless Steel and How to Optimise the Weld Performance

ABSTRACT

The talk explores key aspects of duplex stainless steel welding, including data sources for joint design, heat inputs, and interpass temperatures. It highlights the differences between welding austenitic stainless steels and duplex alloys, emphasizing the critical role of duplex weld microstructure. Various strategies for enhancing corrosion resistance are discussed, such as the use of higher alloy fillers and alternative shielding gas mixtures. The presentation also stresses the importance of post-weld cleaning, comparing different cleaning methods. Post-weld testing is covered in detail, with a focus on tests beyond standard codes like ASME VIII, including both non-destructive testing (NDT) and ISO 17781 testing. Additionally, considerations for filler metal selection when welding duplex to dissimilar metals are addressed. The talk concludes with real-world examples of challenging yet successful fabrications.

About the speaker: Dr. Roger Francis

Dr. Francis has over 50 years of experience as a corrosion engineer, specialising in marine corrosion, desalination, sour oil and gas corrosion, mineral processing, and the chemical and process industries. He currently runs his own corrosion consultancy firm, RFMaterials, established in 2012.

Publications & research:

  • Authored over 100 technical papers, with a focus on copper alloys and duplex stainless steels.
  • Written seven books on corrosion and co-edited three others, including a recent book on corrosion in desalination plants.

Leadership & recognition:

  • Served as Chair of NACE Europe, twice as NACE European Area Director, and as Chair of NACE STG 32 (Oil and Gas; metals).
  • Named a NACE Fellow (2005) for contributions to marine corrosion.
  • Recipient of the T.J. Hull Award (2014) for publications and the Paul McIntyre Award (2023) from ICorr for work in corrosion standards and education.
