ABSTRACT

The talk about EN 1090 will delve into the significance of this European standard that governs the execution of steel structures, particularly in the context of quality assurance, safety, and regulatory compliance. EN 1090 has become a globally recognized benchmark, especially within the European Union, where it is mandatory for manufacturers to meet its requirements to affix the CE marking on structural components. This standard ensures that fabrication processes — from welding to material traceability—are consistently monitored and controlled under a certified system.

As Singapore continues to align its construction practices with international norms through the adoption of Eurocodes, the relevance of EN 1090 becomes increasingly critical. The local adaptation, SS EN 1090, reflects Singapore’s strategic move to enhance the quality and competitiveness of its built environment. Implementing EN 1090 not only supports Singapore’s ambition to be a global hub for engineering excellence but also strengthens the integrity and safety of its infrastructure projects.

However, the journey toward full implementation is not without challenges. The industry must navigate complex certification processes, invest in training for welding coordination and quality control, and upgrade production systems to meet stringent compliance requirements. This talk will explore how these challenges can be addressed, and why embracing EN 1090 is a necessary step for Singapore to remain at the forefront of global construction standards.
