Non-Destructive Methods for civil engineering: capabilities, limitations and typical applications

The lecture will begin with an introduction to measuring principles and applications of NDT for civil engineering.  Three topics will then be described in detail: (1) Locating and imaging structural elements and defects using Eddy Current Testing, Ground Penetrating Radar and Ultrasonic Tomography, (2) Evaluation of concrete compressive strength using rebound hammer testing and ultrasonic pulse velocity testing, (3) Corrosion assessment of reinforced concrete using electrical methods.

About the speaker:

Dr Guido Tronca has over 20 years’ experience in the field of NDT for civil engineering.  He was product manager for concrete inspection products at Proceq SA (part of Screening Eagle Technologies) from 2014 to 2019. Dr Tronca now runs GTStudio, a successful NDT service and training provider in Italy, which he founded himself. Dr Tronca offers on-site and remote support for engineering firms, inspection companies and contractors operating in the fields of structural design, testing, maintenance and rehabilitation of modern and historical structures. Dr Tronca is a certified Level II/III Expert in several NDT methods for Civil Engineering at Italian Accredia, the Italian accreditation body.
